New Castle
New Castle is a quaint town situated in a narrow valley with views of mountain peaks, and it is the proud home of an award-winning golf course. This town is rich in history and charm. New Castle's prime location on the western edge of the Rocky Mountains, temperate climate, friendly neighborhoods, great schools and easy access to I-70 make New Castle a highly attractive community in which to live, work and play.
The area has 12 municipal parks, several in-town trails and access to both the Colorado River and the Flattops. New Castle's Recreation Department offers an amazing number of sports programs for kids of all ages.
Location
New Castle is nestled in the Colorado River Valley, at the western edge of the Rocky Mountains at an altitude of 5,550 feet above Sea Level.
Climate
Our climate partakes of both the mountains and the high desert to the west. We have at least 260 days of sunlight per year. High temperatures in the summer can reach 90° and January lows can drop to 10°. The average lows in January are in the mid 20′s and the average highs in July are in the mid 70′s.
Population
The population of New Castle was 4,518 citizens in 2010.
Education
New Castle is part of the Garfield Re-2 School District, which also serves the neighboring communities of Silt and Rifle. There are two Elementary Schools and a Middle School in town, and Coal Ridge High School is just outside town on Route 6. Garfield Re-2 is a district of high expectations, high standards, and in persistent pursuit of quality from our staff and our students.
Medical Services
The health needs of New Castle citizens are served by New Castle Family Health, Castle Valley Children’s Clinic and A Center for Women, all located in the New Castle Plaza. New Castle Family Fitness and Crossfit Generate help maintain wellness through structured exercise programs. Furthermore, the New Castle Recreation Department, Lakota Canyon Ranch & Golf Club, and Recreation Center, Rocky Mountain Martial Arts and our numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation all provide opportunities for healthy living. New Castle is close to two hospitals Valley View Hospital (10 miles east in Glenwood Springs) and Grand River Hospital (12 miles west in Rifle).
Recreation
At an elevation of 5500 feet and with four distinct seasons, the town offers year-round recreational opportunities, including hiking, biking, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, skiing, camping and golfing.
